I owned a Litter-Robot 3 Connect for just over two years before upgrading to the LR4, and it earned every dollar. The core promise — never scoop again — held up completely. The globe rotation reliably sifted clumps into the waste drawer after every use, the carbon filter kept odor manageable, and the app notifications meant I never forgot to empty the drawer. It ran daily for two cats without a single mechanical failure. That said, the LR3's rough edges are real. The entrance opening is noticeably smaller than the LR4's redesigned globe, and our 14-pound cat had to squeeze in at an angle. The motor is louder — not unbearable, but enough that we moved it out of the bedroom. And without a weight sensor, the app can't distinguish between cats, so the usage data is household-level only. If you have multiple cats and want per-cat health tracking, the LR4 is the better choice. The reason to consider a Litter-Robot 3 in 2026 is price. Whisker still sells certified refurbished units, and secondhand units in good condition pop up regularly. If you can get one for $250-375 and you have a single average-sized cat, it delivers 90% of the LR4 experience for roughly half the cost. The technology is proven, parts are still available, and the app still works.
